NEW DELHI, May 12 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people have been killed and two others injured in a road accident in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, police said Saturday.
"The accident occurred near Georai Tanda village in the state's Aurangabad district when a vehicle in which the victims were travelling collided head-on with a water tanker late Friday evening," a police official said.
The injured were admitted to a local state-run hospital, he said. "The condition of both the injured are said to be serious," the official added.
Eye-witnesses told cops that the passenger vehicle was travelling at high speed and the collision took place when its driver lost control while tying to overtake another vehicle.
"A probe has been ordered into the incident," he said.
India has one of the highest numbers of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
